The Big Bench by Wim Poppinga

Posted in Outdoor by Hellodesign on August 28, 2009

The Big Bench by Wim Poppinga was developed as a durable product for the contemporary public space. It is meant to be a modern version of the classic park bench made from castings and shelves. It has an H-shaped profile and consists of boards which are 90 x 120 cm. A particular detail of the bench is that not all of the wood is trapped between the castings. The front shelf of the seat and the top shelf of the back continue across the entire length of the bench. These ‘free’ boards are attached to the bench through other boards, via the seat and backrest, which are connected to the castings.

For no apparent reason, for camping or simply summertime funk; the idea of a backyard shower sounds cool and sublime. Carry the canister out and hang it from a tree and indulge in some unadulterated fun! Fashioned as a plastic molded box, the can of the Portable Shower has a capacity of 12 liters. To enhance the pressure of the water flow, one can kick-start the pump with the touch of a button; which is powered with a detachable rechargeable battery. Pull out the spout end and get going wet!

Well, what’ve we got here? A versatile little seat contraption eh? Yeah, yeah, that’s what it is. Wait! It’s also a planter! Wait! It’s also a side-table, as they call them. This is exactly the octohedron I’ve been searching for all my furniture-seeking life. Isn’t a strange corner we turn around when at first we seek out a seat for our very own?
