Japanese designer Tokujin Yoshioka will launch a collection of transparent polycarbonate furniture at the Kartell showroom in Milan next month. Called The Invisibles, the collection will include chairs, tables, armchairs and benches displayed within an installation at the store designed by Yoshioka.

In Milan next month Copenhagen design collective KiBiSi will launch a folded aluminium chair for design brand Quinze & Milan. Called Tripart, the design is made of three folded sheets of metal, joined together by bolts under the seat.

Belgian design brand Quinze & Milan invited Copenhagen industrial design trio KiBiSi (Lars Holme Larsen, Bjarke Ingels and Jens Martin Skibsted) to create the ultimate simple “knock down” chair without the need for major tooling. The chair will be presented in Milan next month.

French designer Eric Jourdan has designed a range of seating for French design brand Ligne Roset. Called Harry, the collection includes a sofa and armchair with deep seats and high rounded backrests. The designs are available with either straight metal legs or a bent tubular metal base. This design creation is a surprise coming as it does from Eric Jourdan and from Ligne Roset : ‘Harry’ is the most hybrid and bold piece of the new Roset collection. It is contemporary and classic, as switched-on as it is old-hat and yet beautiful – so much so that you don’t know what to think about its origins. Starting from an archetype of à la française style furniture reassessed by Jourdan’s eye, the French maker has produced a range that is authentically undatable, somewhere between 1940 and 2010, as offbeat as vodka & tonic served in Limoges porcelain.

Three steps and we’re ready to eat! Yes, you’re reading Yatzer and not Martha Stewart, and this ain’t a cooking lesson, but in three simple steps you will have assembled the Pi dinning table which was designed by Roderick Fry.  Fry, wanted to create a simple, affordable and stable dinning table as his former dinning table (designed and manufactured by a large consumer brand), was “insulted for its instability” by a friend of his who happens to be a designer.

Hong Kong designer Michael Young will launch a swivelling tub chair for Swedish design brand Swedese at the Stockholm Furniture Fair. Called Avalon, the upholstered chair is meant for use in contract furnishing and also comes in a static version. “Avalon was created as nod towards the man that first inspired me to become a designer, Vernor Panton,” says Michael Young. “I felt that there had not been a great deal of evolution in the big soft upholstered tub chair sector recently, certainly non that swivel and as ever I like to design things that I could have in my own home. It’s a serious contract piece suitable for airports and hotels alike. It is also the only one-piece injection chair produced in Sweden in the last 25 years and a serious commitment to the vision of longevity.”

Mumble was conceived by UAU to completely changethe traditional concept of the sofa. It is a highly moldable object that is well accepted in any atmosphere. Mumble is the answer to the different requests of the market as it is not tied with its back against the wall, but can be the main object of a room.

Mumble can be arranged in a central position, lined up as a corner unit, or as an island, according to the necessity of the client. Thanks to the different modules, Mumble can be placed into both tiny spaces and very wide rooms. It can also be arranged in public spaces such as waiting areas and lounges.

Mumble guarantees comfort and relaxation with a more comfortable seat thanks to the low, soft, backside and a more traditional seat for reading, thanks to the high backside that supports the shoulders.

The different modules are easily approachable and connectable along with the accessories: the round stool, for example, can be used without the central part to become a simple pillow. The empty space can be filled with a tray, becoming a tabletop for drinks and food. The wide selection of covers (leather – eco leather – and fabrics) make it suitable for many different rooms: lounge bar, home and public spaces.

French duo Gautier Pelegrin and Vincent Taïani joined their forces and created the Noon studio. After their studies in industrial product in France the two designers followed separated careers for a long time until the moment they decided to collaborate and create their own studio. The result of this fusion is a mix of different experiences that allows a new approach to furniture and object design. Different perspectives can be a barrier to productive collaboration but that’s not the case with Noon studio; on the contrary it is an interchange of ideas, an effective way to stimulate creative thinking. The concepts of Noon studio come to confirm the fact that the collaboration of the two designers has only positive effects. A creative relationship that manages to generate new inspirational concepts.

At this year’s imm cologne the French manufacturer Ligne Roset presents this new sofa series by Inga Sempé. ‘Ruche’ consists of nothing more than an upholstered, quilted blanket which is draped over a simple wooden base.

Maine-based solid wood furniture craftsmen Thos. Moser have recently introduced the Meridian collection of tables, seating and storage pieces. The collection is a more contemporary style than what Thos. Moser is commonly known for, a direction driven by the company’s lead designer, David Moser. It is the company’s first collection to be launched using ash, which allows the grain and texture of the wood to come to the fore and adds a clean, modern feel. Meridian is also available in cherry.

Sauerbruch Hutton have designed the Munich Lounge Chair, which will be produced by German manufacturer ClassiCon, who will be presenting the chair at the upcoming 2010 IMM Cologne show. Sauerbruch Hutton designed the chair as part of a range of seating for the Museum Brandhorst in Munich, which they also designed.

A house of small surfaces with resonable costs, targeted to an audience searching for concrete and innovative solutions. The quality of a space does not depend on the dimensions and design furniture does not necessarily imply a budget for a few. The Poliform house is based on a simple architectural project, in which kitchen, bedroom and bathroom become a whole with the living area that overlooks the terrace. The fulcrum of the project is represented by the completeness of the furnishing project: day zone, kitchen, bed and elements for the night zone were carefully selected from Poliform and Varenna collections. Each choise, each detail is the result of a deep functional analysis. But our private world also needs some beauty. That is why the stylistic aspect has not been missed out: the Poliform house has been created with the contribution of designers like Marcel Wanders, Paola Navone, Roberto Barbieri and Carlo Colombo. This initiative reverses common preconceives and becomes an example of a responsible and accessible conception of interior design.

French designer Victor Boëda has created the Lilium sofa and chair for the Paris based furniture manufacturer Steiner. Lilium is a soft couch with a floral line. An assemblage of three sheets, one per function: seat, kidney-level support & back-rest.

Petter Thörne and Anders Johnsson both Swedish in their origin are what we could call ‘good designers but equally good entrepreneurs’. Having only graduated from Konstfack, Stochkholm this Spring, the design duo have managed to make their work known in the world of design firstly through their university final project ‘the mold chair’ which received wide media coverage but also through other projects of equal interest such as the Muutos 2009 award-winning ‘KEEP’ dining table. The distinction of the designers’ work in their previous conceptions has been that besides the innovation and simple lines, the pieces of furniture created were made of waste materials and discarded wood from past furniture production. This not only allows the market to carry well designed but also environment friendly products.

Education is an important asset for any young people and all elements or details that referring to such an important issue should be analyzed carefully.  Design is one of these elements and both French designers François Mangeol and Sophie Françon seem to know that very well as their latest project not only reflects the philosophy of harmony and beauty but it is also functional helping this way the students to feel comfortable in their school classes.

Cheungvogl is a young international architectural practice founded in 2008. The design studio is based in Hong Kong, led by Chinese-Canadian architect Judy Cheung and German architect Christoph Vogl. Their latest project is called Umarmung and it is inspired by the long tradition of floor-sitting culture in Japan where the connection between the body and conversations is not restricted to universal seat height and conventional definition of sofa.

This chair is inspired and dedicated to every chair which lies in our grandmother’s house.  An antique chair with the attractive silhouette despite its age, however, it has a handicap.  Its leg is broken and the backrest was damaged.  The chair is too old; despite its warmth and its memories it shows its tragic appearance and identifies its age.

“The wooden chairs that was made in the past and which has become the world standard, has more of a industrial art-like handmade warmth and less design.” This is a series announced in 2008, which was realized by the collaboration with the product designer, Naoto Fukasawa. The lineup is the Hiroshima, a series that is made by beech and oak that has a non-painted finished look showing the natural wood grains, and the Traditional Series which we have modernized the design of the European style furniture from the Mediterranean series and the Versailles series. Both the Mediterranean and Versailles from Maruni were best sellers since the 1980’s in Japan. The Maruni Collection has an exquisite form and a design with no margin of error. It has been appreciated for its high perfection level of comfort, and has been receiving remarkable attention in Japan as well as from abroad.

Who doesn’t remember James Bowler & Samuel Wright, the two young design graduates of Nottingham Trent University at their first Yatzer presentation who joined their forces with aim to provide a fresh look in the contemporary products design. Now they are here again with new projects and even fresher ideas. & then design is back. The first collaboration of the designers was named “& here we go…” followed by the second one known as “& again…”. Both collections were a blend of the two designers’ distinctive styles, a recipe that lead James and Samuel to success and recognition. James’ insight and knowledge mixed with Samuels’ aesthetic touch manage to evoke positive emotions through their projects. In order to develop new products & then design is open to new collaborations with furniture manufactures in the future.

The tiny store opened by British designer Jasper Morrison, is actually housed in an unused area of Morrison’s studio. The design of the shop is simple, wooden shelves are stocked with Morrison’s own designs and those of his peers such as designers Sori Yanagi and Naoto Fukasawa. The Jasper Morrison Ltd. shop is located at 24b Kingsland Road, London and is open monday to friday (11am – 5pm).
