Posted in Books by Hellodesign on August 31, 2009

bauhaus_book

The Bauhaus—founded in Weimar in 1919, located in Dessau beginning in 1925, and closed in Berlin in 1933—continues to be the most effective and successful export article of twentieth-century German culture. Even more than seventy years after it was closed, this interdisciplinary school for art, architecture, design, and theater has not lost any of its currentness. On the occasion of the ninetieth anniversary of the founding of the Bauhaus, this profusely illustrated, comprehensive publication with around four hundred color illustrations reexamines and reevaluates the art school’s history and influence. In this collaborative project by the three leading institutes at the former sites of the Bauhaus’s activities—the Bauhaus-Archiv Berlin, the Stiftung Bauhaus Dessau, and the Bauhaus-Museum der Klassik Stiftung Weimar—the historic Bauhaus and the trail of its reception are closely examined and analyzed based on sixty-eight selected highlights, including the hitherto neglected aspects of the Bauhaus during the period of National Socialism as well as its international propagation and commercialization.

Apartment in Carcavelos by Hugo Proenca

carcavelos

Within a small and inadequate 65 sqm flat, near the beach, in Carcavelos , the primary objective was the creation of a strategy that highlighted the division between spaces and added to the walls more than streaming elements. A single guiding line that solves in a single stroke the program as well as the constraints inherited by the building system – the interior structural vestment in concrete could not be demolished within the available budget. The project was to organize a single residential home – living room, bedroom, dining room, kitchen and bathroom, without preconceived functional concepts. These are autonomous areas, where only the bathroom and bedroom have doors. The transition between spaces reveal some elements of surprise, and creates intentional interrelations. We can claim that these are gateways where the feeling of the whole is never lost.

formodesign

Our friends from formodesign sent us House on the Water, a self-sufficient house for nomadic life offshore. Designed as a rental house for people who want to be independent it’s available only through water. It is located by Navagio beach, NW coast of the Greek Zante island.

The orientation was developed to maximize the use of solar energy. Strong decisions and consequence in driving its proportions guarantee the uniqueness of (formo)design. Dynamic and simple form are the result of the yach architecture interpretation. The core, made of concrete, is combined with steel cantilever structures. Foundation for the house is a concrete counterweight foot stabilizet with the sea bed pile system. The floating deck, which rises with the water level thanks to the railing installed in the core structure, leads you to the stairway. The top deck is available for the residents as well.

The Big Bench - all image courtesy of Wim Poppinga

The Big Bench by Wim Poppinga was developed as a durable product for the contemporary public space. It is meant to be a modern version of the classic park bench made from castings and shelves. It has an H-shaped profile and consists of boards which are 90 x 120 cm. A particular detail of the bench is that not all of the wood is trapped between the castings. The front shelf of the seat and the top shelf of the back continue across the entire length of the bench. These ‘free’ boards are attached to the bench through other boards, via the seat and backrest, which are connected to the castings.

Tom Dixon has two new seating projects which will be released during London Design Festival – the Slab Bar Stool and Offcut Stool which are new additions to his 2009 utility collection. The wayney edge of a piece of wood is the irregular outer rim found closest to the bark or top of the trunk. It is normally the worst cut of wood and is usually discarded or burnt. Offcut Stool is a design which makes use of these oak scraps, utilizing the wood which is typically the most textured. Its elementary form consists of a circular round seat making use of the curved offcuts, and its construction requires no screws or glue and can be flat packed for ease of delivery.

Gold by Arik Levy

gold2

This doorstop and paperweight may look like a gold brick, but is actually made using aluminum, cast iron and steel. The product was created by designer Arik Levy for the french company Edition Nouveaux Objets (E.N.O.). The brick has the iconic form of gold bouillon with an official looking stamp on the top. The piece is made using a mixture of metal with a thin gold plating on the outside. The accessory is perhaps evocative of the world’s financial situation prior to its recent collapse. Looks can be very deceiving, so holding your door open with this brick may garner a few looks.
