g9

It’s hard not to like the “Global Use” G9 phone, which breaks out of the typical iPhone-ocity with louvered keys on the slide-out deck, a chunky dock, and minimalist, elegant on-screen graphic design. The G9 was designed by Ichiro Iwasaki, the man behind iida, a/k/a Iwasaki Design Studio.

The residence is built directly on an uneven plot of land, and the design aims to overcome the expected structural issues. The concrete shafts are installed in the ground at different levels, slightly distanced from the retaining wall.

ICON magazine issue #073

Like a hype-cannon aimed at the future, or a radio telescope picking up transmissions from planet Koolhaas, OMA’s Prada Transformer graces the cover of the July icon, which is in shops now. We look at Rem’s pavilion-to-end-all-pavilions from all angles. Also on pavilion patrol are artist duo Elmgreen & Dragset, who turn Sverre Fehn’s 1962 Nordic pavilion in Venice into a modernist shag-pad. More modest sleeping quarters are on offer from Chilean architect Alejandro Aravena – we take a look at his brick dorm block in Austin, Texas. (more…)

The Gorge Coffee Table by Ramei Keum

gorge_table

Korean designer Ramei Keum has sent us images of his Gorge coffee table. ‘Gorge’ is a coffee table with a shape of a gorge. Designing it, I strived to put it in a form so that elements composing of a table such as a top board and legs may become one element, not individual elements. The shape of a gorge folded in a V shape itself plays a structural role of supporting the top board of the table, and plays a role of holding/ keeping magazines or books as well as completing an aesthetic form of the table.

This project was requested from a 30-something couple. The client desired an open and varied space. The lot is located at a part of subdivision lots where idyllic scenery still remains. The east side of the lot faces a hilly area. The plan has been designed to incorporate the scenery as well as to protect privacy from neighborhood, resulting in the composition of being connected with the outward world while closed inward at the same time.

Code X Luxury Hybrid Yacht

Posted in 07. Green, 08. Transport by Hellodesign on June 9, 2009

This is one lean, mean and green floating machine. Part stealth fighter, part 007 fantasy, this 47 foot “CODE X” Yacht by Swiss Yacht builder CODE X, is a catamaran style power yacht that is not only ubber-luxurious but a technological wet dream. Packed with the latest in LED touchscreen control panels that delivers complete automated control over such things like the solar/hybrid power system to the GPS-controlled ‘virtual anchor’ system that utilises the electric motors to maintain a stationary position regardless of wind or currents. If you get tired of saving the planet and creeping around in near silent mode, you can rock the docks with the twin Ilmor Formula One engines, delivering a hefty 710hp. This Swiss design features a Kevlar/carbon shell with phototropic-shaded windows. The deck is UV-resistant with a heat-repellent shell ensuring you are hotter than your ride.
