The Zuidkas by Architectenbureau Paul de Ruiter

The Zuidkas is a study carried out by Paul de Ruiter Architects and was commissioned by the Government Buildings Agency. The assignment centres on an imaginary office building of over 11,000 m² on the Zuidas tangent in Amsterdam, which is intended to achieve as high a score as possible with regard to the fulfilment of environmental objectives. Four other architectural firms besides Paul de Ruiter were invited to work on this assignment. The joint results are intended to help determine a future standard for sustainability within the Government Buildings Agency’s own building stock. Within the firm, we have taken up the assignment as an extra opportunity for R&D, in order to deepen the expertise developed within Paul de Ruiter in the area of sustainable construction. As sustainable construction can only be realised by taking an integrated approach to design, we have closely involved Arup from the outset in the design process. As a team, we hope to stand at the cradle of a new generation of sustainable government buildings.

Sony Ericsson Debuts New Eco-Phones

There were whispers all week that Sony Ericsson would be releasing a line of eco-friendly cellphones today – and it turns out that the rumors were true. The telecom giant debuted 2 new green handsets, the Naite and the C901 cybershot phone in a live webcast that took place at 1PM GMT in London today. The sleek new phones are tangible manifestations of the GreenHeart concept phone, which Sony Ericsson came up with way back in 2008 as its way of letting consumers know that it, too, was on the green bandwagon. Those who doubted that the GreenHeart concept would ever come to fruition need not wonder any longer as Sony Ericsson is just about ready to bring their new eco-friendly phones to the market.

White Selection: new Esprit bathroom set by Kludi

Surprising extra details make the new Kludi Esprit complete bathroom set something really special. All in brilliant white, the set includes bathtub, shower, vanity, wall closets and a toilet/bidet wall. Next to the geometrical vanity, you find a portable storage unit, a sort of dressing table on wheels. This ingenious little box is the ideal way to move your products around, whilst keeping them tidy and tucked away. Likewise, in another delightful detail, tea light holders to match the chrome fittings are mounted above the bathtub. An illuminated mirror, a double shower and neat rectangular toilet and bidet complete the look. A complete bathroom set that’s got it all… the Esprit set for 2009 from Kludi is simply remarkable.

Colo dishwasher by Peter Schwartz and Helene Steiner

A concept for a dishwasher combined with a sink by designers Peter Schwartz and Helene Steiner is on show at DMY Youngsters exhibition in Berlin this week. Dirty crockery is loaded into a tray at the table, then put into the sink. A cover lowered over the sink seals the dishwasher and contains water jets. The clean dishes are then stored on the wall in the same tray in which they were washed, ready to be carried back to the table for the next mealtime.
