Lanterne Marine by Barber and Jay Osgerby for Venini

Posted in Accessories by Hellodesign on May 22, 2009

Italian glassmakers Venini launched a collection of hand-blown vases by London designers Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby in Milan last month. Aluminium frames are attached to the vases by a ring where the upper glass component (intended to hold flower stems in place) is inserted into the lower one. These frames were inspired by vernacular lanterns seen hanging from boats in the Venetian Lagoon when the designers travelled from the mainland to Venini’s workshops on the island of Murano.

Restaurant de la cinémathèque française by Mut-architecture

Arriving at the Cinematheque Francaise we enter Parc Bercy. When walking into the park the first thing you now see is a picnic table. The table serves Restaurant 51 – the restaurant of the Cinematheque – a restaurant designed by Mut-architecture (A collaborative founded by Léo Morand & John Mascaro), and Brigitte Bouillot of La Protege Design. We follow the lines of the table, a wooden structure bent and shaped to seat the greatest number of restaurant goers in the most convivial setting. With half the table outdoors, facing Parc Bercy and the other half twisting its path through the interior of the restaurant, people can now sit comfortably close to one another and enjoy a meal or a glass of wine before visiting the Museum, or after leaving it. Like a Lionel toy race car set, the table can be taken apart, fashioned into a number of different variations depending on the needs of the restaurant or changes in the weather.

Occidorient carpet by François Mangeol

Occidorient_by_Francois_Mangeol

Occidorient is a carpet. It conceals an essential function of representation. It tries to cross two different, oriental and western cultures, using representative codes and try to offer, a second reading and an update of a know-how.
Historically, the Persian carpet deals with divine. It always filled in East a double function, practical and symbolic. So it is built as a work of architecture, representing a plan. It establishes a magic space including the sphere of the universe. The size(format) ” kelleghi ” or ” kelley ” is very close of 16/9 of our cinema and tv screens, this screen where we design our world.

ICON magazine issue #072

Posted in Magazines by Hellodesign on May 22, 2009

icon_72

The June issue of icon is out now. This month, we dig into the growing popularity of urban farming. Some architects see it as the Holy Grail of sustainable cities – but is it? We take a look at the proposals, from skyscraping superfarms to the greening of wasteland. There’s also an interview with the Swiss master of mountain minimalism, Valerio Olgiati, on why he makes his buildings so hard to understand. Altogether easier to grasp is the straightforward, pared-down design of Swedish studio TAF, which is profiled as well.

In Conversation this month are Eyal Weizman and Dan Graham, talking two-way mirrors and Israeli security theatre. Up front, we have shoot-outs in the Guggenheim, ice cream vans and new work from OMA, Nendo, Konstantin Grcic and Front. In Review there’s Google Street View UK, Jade Goody’s funeral, the Jazz Century and books by Jeremy Till, Owen Hatherley and Marc Augé.
