Montecito Residence by OSKA Architects

Posted in 03. Architecture by Hellodesign on May 21, 2009

Montecito Residence

Montecito Residence is a single-family home set in the fire-prone Toro Canyon. The owners wanted a house that minimized its use of scarce natural resources and recognized the challenging environmental conditions of the area. The design solution is a house that functions as an umbrella to shield the house from the sun and allows naturally cool offshore breezes to move through the space. The house is made of simple, fire resistant materials. Steel will be allowed to oxidize and concrete will be toned to allow the house to blend into the landscape.

Monza chair by Konstantin Grcic for Plank

“After the projects Miura and Myto the MONZA chair embodies the further development and deepening of my collaboration with PLANK. The project connects the materials wood and plastic injection moulding and hence the artisan roots of PLANK with the characteristics of modern industrial design. The MONZA armchair is conceived as a simple wood-construction which formally refers to a typology of chairs originating in Scandinavia. The chair’s main character is defined by a back-/armrest in plastic moulding, which on the one hand serves the chair’s structure and on the other provides comfort and colour.”

“For years I have been longing for an opportunity to work with aluminium extrusions – an industrial technology which combines superior structural properties with an elegantly sleek aesthetic. Inspired by the work Oscar Tusquets and Lluis Clotet have carried out for Bd Barcelona since the early 80’s I have designed a wing-like table top using extruded profiles. TABLE_B spans a maximum length of 3,5 meters and comes with three optional substructures in wood, steel or artificial stone.”

Modern Radiators from I-radium

iridium

Nature-inspired modern radiators from I-radium are a fantastic way to add creative flair to your home. I-radium applies infrared technology to real wood to create an extraordinary medium for heating! Now, wood radiators can add an unexpected element of warmth and beauty to any room. The Leaf, Wood and Flutter radiators are things of beauty. Indeed, guests may mistakes the radiators for purely aesthetic pieces of art. But the infrared rays, which warm people and things first (and then the air around them) make the radiators so much more functional. Leaf transmits the essence of a leaf – the ribs form the shape in a pleasingly abstract way. Wood radiator is available in oak, ebony and wenge – its sculpted shape is totally refined. The peaceful Flutter has waves reminiscent of ripples on a lake.

Jenni Kayne boutique by Standard

Standard partner Jeffrey Allsbrook worked with Jenni Kayne to create the debut retail venue for her growing collection of clothing for women, and a range of her favorite contemporary and vintage jewelry, accessories, books and furnishings. Behind iron gates, a vestibule leads through wood-clad doors into the interior of the brick and steel building. Spacious and spare, with new interior walls positioned to layer the building’s 2400 square feet into a series of light-flled display rooms, the store settles comfortably into this neighborhood of art galleries. The new store brings to the retail clothing experience the clarity and openness of a gallery setting combined with the texture and comfort of a modern California home. The store’s simplicity also makes it a fexible setting for Jenni’s store to grow and change over time.

Constrains like limited space and behavioral changes like cooking while entertaining have dictated the transition from monstrous-sized kitchens to neat compact kitchenettes and open modular concepts. Adopting these changes, Electrolux brings to us to two unique concepts. The Rendez-vous interactive table is a cook-top that allows you to do jiffy cooking and entertain at the same time. The Volare, akin to the Lounge Bar, is a wall mounted appliance that’s nothing short of an artistic kitchen!

At ICFF 2009, we met the brothers Vincent and Paul Georgeson, the founders of Misewell, a Milwaukee, Wisconsin based furniture design and manufacturing company that was formed in the summer of 2008. Judging by the amount of media attention Misewell has received, the crowds of people at their booth, and the winning of this year’s ICFF Editors Award for best new designer, they appear to already be well on their way in the business of designer furniture.

Colonello’s Collection: On/Off for Boffi

colonello-s-collection-on-off-for-boffi-large3

The name says it all: Boffi’s On/Off kitchen, designed by Alberto Colonello, transforms from a solid paneled wall into a full-functioning, gourmet kitchen nearly instantaneously. Designed to look like a single mono block of steel when closed, the minimalist kitchen is marked by a smooth and unobtrusive exterior that conceals everything from the sink and stove to the wall oven. As with the notorious Polly Pocket (from the 1980s) the On/Off kitchen packs itself into a compact “case” when not in use.
