Hemeroscopium House by Ensamble Studio

What strikes you, when you first take in the sights of the Hemeroscopium house, is the raw energy that is emitted from the imposing façade of interlocking concrete beams and glass that comes together in a way that grips you. Perhaps it is Ensamble studio who gives the best description of the place as “an allusion to a place that exists only in our minds, in our senses that is ever-changing and mutable, but is nonetheless real”.

Luxury Bathroom Fittings – Supernova fittings line by Dornbracht

Like the star after which it is named, the Supernova luxury bathroom fittings line from Dornbracht is highly luminous. High gloss surfaces enhance the sculptural effect of the fittings. Linear and geometric, the sharp angles of the fittings reflect the angles of the bathroom architecture. This clever style mirroring is especially apparent when you see the central furniture island, where all water sources in the bathroom are bought together.

Lyn Rice Architects: Parsons Johnson Design Center

New York city’s Parsons School of Design now has a 32,800 sq. ft. campus nexus designed by Lyn Rice Architects. The well known design school recently opened the Sheila C. Johnson design center, which will serve as a form of urban quad. The various buildings of the downtown campus are now all unified in their circulation, using the new space as a non-traditional congregation point. The new space boasts galleries, archives, an auditorium and seminar spaces in addition to it main floor lounge looking out into the campus’s greenwich village setting. The lounge is continued on the exterior with deep window frames that allow sitting.

Valparaiso Cultural Center competition results

The winners of the Valparaiso Cultural Center competition in Chile were just announced. The competition came after a proposal from brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer was rejected. The Cultural Center will be built where the former prison stood for the last 150 years.
The winning projects are:
1st Prize – Jonathan Holmes, Martín Labbé, Carolina Portugueis, Osvaldo Spichiger
2nd Prize – Patricio Mardones, Juan Francisco Garcés, Felipe Ortiz, Pablo Ropert, Rocío Costa

Abalos + Sentkiewicz Arquitectos: TPAC – Taipei Performing Art Center Proposal

Here is the proposal for Spanish firm Abalos + Sentkiewicz arquitectos, who received third prize for their design proposal for the taipei performing arts center international competition. the building is composed of eight circular structures which are connected through layers.

Box Light by Jonas Hakaniemi

No dimmers necessary, simply “Touch the lamp! Create your own light by sliding the lid,” says Jonas. A recent graduate from the Lahti Institute of Design in Finland, his Box light has just received an honorable mention from the Red dot jury. “This is as straightforward as interactive design can get.” We’ve seen similar lights, but the relatively small scale of this one opens up possibilities for creative applications.
