Muji Awards exhibition, London

It says something about its cache that, in only its third outing, Muji’s International Design Competition attracted nearly 2,000 entries from 35 countries. From this haul, the panel of judges – among them, Naoto Fukasawa and Jasper Morrison – announced the seven winners back in December. All the winners are now on show at Muji on London’s Kings Road.

Slow Chair by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec from Vitra
Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec created this expansive armchair by using an extremely strong, precisely shaped knit which is stretched over the metal frame like a fitted stocking. Thanks to the knit sling cover, the Slow Chair combines soft comfort with ergonomic support, which is further enhanced by thin seat and back cushions. The translucent sling cover replaces the thick cushions of traditional armchairs, resulting in a design that is lightweight, yet generously proportioned. The restrained appearance of the Slow Chair is equally appealing in the living room or conservatory, while offering unrestrained seating comfort. Slow chair from Vitra.

Esplanada Studio / Tatiana Bilbao & at103

This artist’s studio is located in a residential area in the west corner of Mexico City, over a 20m x 40m site. The project has an underground parking space and its formed by a building with 3 levels (a triple-height space, offices on the third level and a service area on the roof), with a very specific architectural program. There were two conditions: on one hand, to be used as a studio and, on the other, to serve as venue for private temporary exhibits. The client asked us for the next spaces: one apartment for guests artists that could stay for a time while developing a practice or a show, a 9×9×9mt space for work or exhibit, one Studio / Office, one kitchen in the large space to use as a side bar for openings and parking for 25 cars.
