Although design is only half as popular as love, compared with Barack Obama or David Beckham it is very high up on the international popularity scale. This, at least, is the result yielded by the international search engines in the world wide web. Design is also currently a hot topic for many manufacturers worldwide, who hope to reanimate their share prices with the help of good design. The results of this year’s “red dot award: product design” in Essen provide further evidence of this development. Never before has the level of participation from companies been as high as in this year. This is despite the fact that the competition for the sought-after red dot awards has been the first choice for global industry for a long time now.

Tel-Aviv, Israel based architect Pitsou Kedem’s Herzelia Pituah House 3, has won fourth place in the buildings category in the Project of the Year Competition organized by Architecture of Israel Quarterly. A monochromatic architectural line is granted by a 3D encounter between horizontal spaces and vertical walls, while architectural richness is achieved through non-material components – light, transparency, and reflection. Within this, the openings regulate the light and shades, accentuating the difference between the various masses, each made of a different material – bare concrete, wood, glass and metal.

Brazilian designers Marcelo Damm, Rafael Roldão, Renato Mosci of deQuinta Design, with the help of Giuliano Mello, have created the Morro Sofa. It all started with a mess. And it was beautiful. Living in Rio, a city surrounded by a bit of chaos here and there, favelas, and thinking that besides all that it works, we figured out that this mess was also functional. And how to incorporate it into a project, how to build upon it? Perhaps even more important, how to make it socially and ecologically relevant and also inspire some criticism? Bring the discussion to your home?

The Ocean series of modern sinks from Bandini are like interactive bathroom art for the user to explore. So sculptural, yet entirely functional, the eye-catching organic forms bring to mind the soothing motion of ocean waves. The rippled surface is realised in ‘technoform’ – which is a modern resin that is at once both hard-wearing and lustrous. The Ocean wash basin is available in two colors, black and white, and two sizes which can be combined into different formations due to their modular nature.
