Princess Elisabeth Station in Antarctica

The Belgian Princess Elisabeth Station in Antarctica was officially inaugurated on 15 February 2009 in the presence of an international delegation of journalists and political representatives. The project, initiated by International Polar Foundation, was made possible thanks to the support of various partners, both public and private.

Trabant Pendant Lamp by Joachim Manz

Joachim Manz designed the Trabant pendant lamp for German lighting manufacturer Tecnolumen. The lamps are concrete balls that hang on a thin wire, and on one end of the concrete ball is a glass lens (either matte or clear) that maintains the same curve as the rest of the ball. The lamps come in two versions, Trabant 1 has a thin lane in the concrete that allows rotating and tilting the lamp, while Trabant 2 does not.

When Riding A Bicycle Just Isn’t Green Enough

If you’ve ever felt the urge to attach a fender to your bike just so you can wrap it in environmentally-aware bumper stickers, then the Green Shadow might be for you. Developed by Mr. Onuff Studio, the bicycle shouts your deep inner connection with Gaia while simultaneously tracking mileage, heat rate and calories through an on board computer. I couldn’t find details on the materials used, but I’m going to assume that fresh ivory, baby seals or endangered pandas were somehow involved, helping snag that valuable pro-earth, anti-animal demographic. MOD.FAB: Stunning Prefab by the School of Frank Lloyd Wright

Frank Lloyd Wright meets modern day prefab in the stunning Mod.Fab home, developed by students at Taliesin West in collaboration with their Dean Victor Sidy and Inhabitat favorite Jennifer Siegal. The goal of the collaboration was to build a prototype prefab conducive to elegant and sustainable living within the heart of the desert landscape. It only took a single picture for us to become instantaneous fans, and from passive solar design to photovoltaic panels and SIPs we’re thoroughly impressed with the project’s sustainable elements.

The i2i Chair by IDEO and Steelcase

Steelcase, the manufacturer of the i2i Chair, which was introduced at the 2008 NeoCon tradeshow, has announced that it will finally be available in March 2009.
The much anticipated chair was developed through the collaboration between design consultancy IDEO and the Steelcase Design Studio.
